Eduard Ender (1822-1883) - c.1830 Graphite Drawing Classical Head Study

Description

A refined and accomplished study of a classical head, drawn from sculpture in the academic tradition. Executed on blue drawing paper, which was favoured ground among 19th century draughtsmen for the depth and contrast it lends to chalk and pencil work; the drawing displays a confident grasp of form and proportion that is impressive for its apparent date. This work was purchased alongside a group of drawings dated 1833, which, if the attribution holds, would place it among the earliest known works by the Viennese artist Eduard Ender, made when he was just eleven years of age. Such precocious academic exercises were not uncommon among the children of artistic families, and Ender, who would go on to a distinguished career, was clearly gifted from an early age. The subject matter and handling are entirely consistent with the Romantic Classicism that dominated Central European art academies in the early 19th century, where the copying of antique sculpture was a fundamental discipline. Artist Biography

Eduard Ender was born in Rome on 3 March 1822, the son of the distinguished Austrian painter Johann Ender, and died in London on 28 December 1883. Raised in an artistic household and trained within the European academic tradition, he developed into a versatile and accomplished painter whose work ranged across historical, allegorical, and genre subjects. His paintings display a fondness for richly imagined historical and literary scenes. Among his notable works are Francis I in the Studio of Cellini, Shakespeare Reading "Macbeth" before the Court of Elizabeth, La Corbeille de Mariage, and A Game of Chess — subjects that reflect the Romantic taste for recreating the drama and atmosphere of past ages. Ender also painted a celebrated double portrait of the German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt and his travelling companion, the botanist Aimé Bonpland. The work is notable for an anecdote attached to it: Humboldt himself expressed dissatisfaction with the portrait on the grounds that the scientific instruments depicted were not rendered with sufficient accuracy — a reminder of the great man's exacting standards.
