Attrib. Jacob van Doort (d.1629) - 1613 Oil Portrait of a Young Gentleman

Description

A remarkable early-seventeenth-century portrait of a young gentleman wearing a black doublet with subtle embroidered designs and an intricate lace collar. His splendid attire and gold chains signify his wealth, whilst the signet rings on each little finger represent his family heritage and noble lineage. The richly decorated rapier upon which he rests his hand symbolises not only wealth but authority and power, yet his relaxed stance suggests controlled strength and honour. An inscription in the upper right reads "Anno Salutis 16.13./AEtatis 24," translating to "Year of Salvation 1613/Age 24." The work is beautifully presented in an ornate black frame with foliate and beaded running patterns. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The artwork has undergone restorative work, including relining and overpainting. There is some discolouration and fine craquelure across the surface. Despite this, the overall condition is good and the piece displays well. The frame is in very good condition, showing only minor scuffs and light surface scratches.

Artist Biography

Jacob van Doort was a Dutch artist originally from Hamburg, active from 1606 to his death in 1629. He worked in both miniature and large scale, and produced portraits for the courts of Denmark and Sweden. Although little is known about his life, he is believed to have been the brother of Abraham van der Doort, who served as Surveyor of King Charles I's Pictures from 1625 to 1640. Van Doort served as court painter to Duke Henrik Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel - brother-in-law to Anne of Denmark and King Christian IV of Denmark - between 1606 and 1609. From 1610, he was court painter to King Christian IV. He is credited with creating the first miniatures painted in Denmark in 1611. He moved to England in 1624 with a recommendation from the Danish King to work for King James I.
