Walter Sickert (1860–1942) was an influential British painter and printmaker, known for his role in the transition from Impressionism to modern British art. He was born in Munich, Germany, to a Danish-German artist father, Oswald Sickert, and moved to London as a child. Sickert initially pursued a career in acting before turning to painting in the early 1880s. He studied under the American-born artist James McNeill Whistler, whose emphasis on tonal harmony strongly influenced his early work. Sickert also spent time in Paris, where he encountered the work of Edgar Degas, whose approach to composition and everyday subject matter had a lasting impact on him. Throughout his career, Sickert became known for his atmospheric depictions of urban life, particularly scenes of music halls, theatres, and domestic interiors. Many of his paintings feature ordinary people in dimly lit, often ambiguous settings, reflecting a modern, sometimes unsettling view of city life. He was a central figure in the Camden Town Group, a collective of artists who focused on contemporary London subjects and helped shape early 20th-century British art. Sickert’s work evolved over time, incorporating brighter colours and looser brushwork, though he retained a strong interest in narrative and mood. He was also an influential teacher and writer on art. Walter Sickert died in Bath, England, in 1942, leaving a legacy as one of the most important figures in British modern painting.
