A romantic 19th-century portrait of a distinguished French gentleman, standing proudly wearing his Legion of Honour medal, France's highest order of merit established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. The artist captures the sitter in exquisite detail, positioned within an atmospheric landscape at sunset. The portrait is housed in a beautiful gilt frame with floral running pattern. Illegibly signed lower right and dated 1841. On millboard.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some surface marks and discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals minor overpainting, particularly noted to the gentlemen's black coat. The frame has a fine patina of age. Various small chips and moulding repairs. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
