Description

This fine 17th century portrait depicts a respectable Flemish bourgeois woman in a deep red bodice and soft white linen falling collar, her dark hair neatly pinned, conveying modest prosperity typical of mid-17th century Antwerp merchant society. The portrait is very much in the tradition of portraits by artists such as Rubens. Unsigned. Well presented in an antique frame. On canvas laid to board.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. Considerable craquelure throughout with abrasions and small areas of paint loss. The artwork has been previously restored, including small areas of overpainting.
