Artist Biography
Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) was an English wood-engraver. Over the course of his career he engraved cutlery, made wood blocks for advertisements, and illustrated children's books. He is best known, however, for his natural history publications, which he wrote and illustrated himself. 'A History of British Birds' is his most famous publication, which is admired today for its wood engravings, especially the small, sharply observed, and often humorous vignettes known as tail-pieces. The book was the forerunner of all modern field guides. Bewick is credited as one of "the first to realise [wood engravings] full potentialities," using metal-engraving tools to cut hard boxwood across the grain, producing printing blocks that could be integrated with metal type, but were much more detailed and durable than traditional woodcuts.
