James Marshall Heseldin (1887-1969) was born in Leeds and trained as an architectural draughtsman. Owing to his poor eyesight which barred him from enlisting, during the First World War Heseldin worked as a draughtsman in a shipyard. In the early 1920s, he travelled to America and became a US citizen. He returned to England on a painting holiday and met Lily Paul, his future wife, in Newlyn. They were married in the village of Rocky Hill, near Princeton, New Jersey and their daughter, Lamorna, was born there in 1922. After several years in America, Heseldin and his family returned to Newlyn, where he rented a studio and began to paint full-time, mainly Cornish street and harbour scenes in watercolour. His compositions were often detailed studies, probably due to his architectural training. He exhibited at the Newlyn Art Gallery and, it appears, nowhere else. Heseldin became a member of the St. Austell Art Society and of the Newlyn Society of Artists. The Penlee House Museum holds an example of his work.
