This dramatic late 18th-century religious work captures a poignant moment from the Passion of Christ. Jesus’ lifeless body is lowered from the cross, while angels above remove the instrument of his suffering. At his feet, a discarded helmet and other pieces of armour lie abandoned, emblematic of the futility of worldly power in the presence of spiritual redemption. Executed with delicate brushwork and striking chiaroscuro lighting. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Some discolouration to the varnish. Fine craquelure and abrasions throughout. The canvas has been relined. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Overall the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
