Description

A captivating 19th century scene, depicting a moment of canine heroism and minor aquatic drama. A gentleman is depicted rescuing his dog from an icy river. Apparently, the dog has already succeeded in retrieving a rather plump duck for his master, proving that loyalty (and appetite) know no bounds. A label on the reverse identifies the gentleman as ‘Mr. Arthur E. Whieldon, master of the Foxhounds at The Vine.’ This inscription references The Vine Hunt in Hannington, England. Hannington has been a popular location for fox hunting for centuries, and continues to host events each year. This oil study is well presented in a gilt frame. Unsigned. On panel.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and surface dirt. Faint scratches, most notably to the centre. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Marks and scuffs to the frame.
