Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was a German born artist, scientific illustrator and naturalist, known for her illustrations of insects and plants. Merian was instrumental in documenting the process of metamorphosis at a time when insects and other creatures were thought to appear magically from mud. Her works contributed greatly to the advance of entomology in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
