Artist Biography

Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767) was a German painter, engraver, and publisher, best known for his engravings of horses, dogs, and hunting scenes. He was born in southern Germany in Ulm, and began his artistic training there under the painter Christoph Resch (1701-1716). He later studied under Johann Falch (1687-1727) in Augsburg and learned the art of engraving. He then moved to Regensburg, and began to hone his ability for drawing horses, aided by many visits to the nearby riding school. After returning to Augsburg, he married his wife Jacobina, and founded his own art publishing house. In 1759 he became the director of the Augsburg Stadtakademie, a significant fine art academy and a major centre for art and artists in the 18th century.
