Description

A charming oil on board depicting a continental village nestled in the crook of a valley. Painted in an impressionist style the artist captures the in expressive, textures brush strokes. Attributed to Carolyn Sergeant signed with her maiden name 'Cann' and dated to the lower right. On board.

Condition

There is wear to the outer edges of the painting from a previous frame. There are surface marks and some paint loss to the upper half of the painting with two 1cm losses to the sky area.

Artist Biography

Carolyn Sergeant nee Alison Margaret Carolyn Cann in Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. She studied at Wimbledon School of Art 1955-59 and at the Royal Academy Schools from graduating in 1962 where she was a silver medallist and where met and married her fellow art student John Sergeant.

She held solo exhibitions in London at Waterhouse & Dodd in 1969 and 1971 and Waterman Fine Art Gallery in 1994 before her first exhibition at Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox in May 1997. In 1992 she held a solo exhibition at the Brian Sinfield Gallery in Burford and her pictures have been included in mixed exhibitions at the Leicester Galleries, Roland, Browse & Delbanco and in numerous galleries in the provinces. In 2003 she had a solo exhibition at the Fine Art Society, London and in 2008 Colnaghi, London exhibited her work.
