A rustic oil landscape from the late 19th Century showing a horse, pulling a cart with two figures in it, across an expansive, flat landscape under a brooding grey sky. The faint silhouette of a dog can be seen in front of the horse. The painting has been inscribed and signed by the artist, with a dedication at the lower left, reading "Joseph Dodds, from his friend Rupert Kettle. 1881." Rupert Alfred Kettle was a prominent judge and barrister in the 19th Century who was known to paint landscapes in oil, although not many have been discovered by this artist, making this a rare item. Joseph Dodds (1819–1891) was a lesser known politician.
The painting has been presented in a substantial gilt effect frame.
On canvas.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is a canvas repair to the reverse which has been roughly restored. The frame has a large area of restoration to the lower right corner and general surface scuffing.
