Castor Ressel - 1910 Oil Prometheus
Description
A striking 1910 oil painting of Prometheus, depicting the mythological figure chained to a rocky mountainside as an eagle descends upon him. The dramatic composition is charged with movement and tension, contrasting the warm, fiery tones of Prometheus’ drapery and body with the cool blues and greens of the surrounding landscape and sea. The expressive, vigorous brushwork gives the scene an almost elemental quality, while the distant sailing vessel and soaring birds add depth and atmosphere. A powerful interpretation of one of classical mythology’s most enduring subjects, the painting captures both the physical torment and heroic defiance associated with the story of Prometheus. Signed lower right. Well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas board.Condition
Minor surface marks and abrasions. Light surface discolouration throughout including yellowing to the varnish layer. A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. The frame has minor surface wear and scuffs. Small loss to the edges of the frame. Small chips and indentations to the frame. The artwork is in very good condition for its age.
