A fine French portrait of a woman wearing a dark pleated dress with a lace collar covering the shoulders and a lace cap with blue ribbons. The sitter's expression is soft but direct as she looks beyond the pictorial space towards the viewer. Presented in an ornate and deep gilt frame with acanthus leaf moulding to the outer edge and a bead course and lambs tongue moulding to the inner edge. Monogrammed and dated to the centre of the left edge. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some surface dirt, discolouration to the varnish, and craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals a very small area of retouching to the background at the left of the sitter's head. There are some some small losses to the moulding at the corners.
