Description

A truly unique and eye catching 19th Century portrait, showing a striking woman in a vibrant red shawl and elaborate lace bonnet. The rich tapestry on the sleeves of her shawl, the delicate lace work of the bonnet and her glistening rings on her hand, show her to be a woman of wealth and stature. She sits in front of a jacquard tapestry curtain, beyond which can be seen a distant chapel with a farm house in front. The sitter is holding a ream of crochet and needles in her lap and engages the viewer with big, soft blue eyes. The style of her ringletted hair and lace bonnet date this portrait circa 1840, when these styles where en vogue. The painting is unsigned and presented in a substantial 19th Century frame with swept rail and corners, boasting elaborate acanthus leaf and shell diaper details. On relined canvas.

Condition

The canvas has been fully relined. There is some craquelure to the surface. There is some discolouration due to the relining process. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of restoration. The frame has tarnishing and a aged finish applied to the gilt.
