A fine 19th century portrait of Mrs. George Norwood and her only child Sarah Anne Norwood. The pair are finely dressed in fashionable clothing of the 1840's. Mrs. Norwood's burgundy gown is typical of the decade, with low, sloping shoulders, and a low pointed waist. Sarah Anne is depicted on her mother's lap in a delicate white gown with red ribbons. The artist has captured the Northwood's delicate features and sense of personality.
Mr. George Northwood was the son of Timothy Northwood who owned a brewery and several inns in the market town of Tring, Hertfordshire. In 1839 he is listed as owning the Rose & Crown and post office. George Northwood died in 1857 at the age of 40.

Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some surface dirt. With areas of craqueleure and slight sagging to the canvas. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of restoration. There are several repairs to the canvas which are visible to the reverse. With small touches of overpainting covering these repairs. With small flakes of paint loss to the outer edges of the canvas.
