Primarily known as the Archdeacon of Nottingham, Brough Maltby was a talented watercolourist, known mostly for his religious scenes, depicting Cathedral interiors and devotional sketches. This pair of delicate watercolours depicts the ornate interiors of Trier Cathedral, the oldest church in Germany. The Corinthian columns have been completed with incredible attention given to the carved stone work. Maltby obviously has an eye for detail, carefully painting the complex architectural features of the gothic revival interiors. The devoted figures amid expansive Christian interiors have been wonderfully visualised by the artists' fine touch. One composition is signed by the artist, inscribed 'Trier' and dated. Both artworks are similar in size and have gum Arabic which adds depth to the composition. Signed and dated and inscribed. On wove.
Condition
The condition is typical for pictures of this age including some discolouration. There is a 2cm tear to the left side of the first study pictured. There is also and a 1cm repaired tear to the lower edge of the second study, a tear to the lower left corner and a loss to the upper left corner. With some glue residue to the edges of both pages.
