British School Late 19th Century Oil - Sailing Ships in a Harbour

Description

Sailing ships navigate turbulent waters in this atmospheric late-nineteenth, possibly early-twentieth century seascape. Whilst the vessels and distant jetty are rendered with careful detail, it is the layered blues, greens and whites of the foaming sea that prove most striking. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The artwork has undergone restorative work, including relining and areas of overpainting. Discolouration to the varnish, as is typical for a picture of this age. Despite the noted imperfections, the condition is good overall and the piece presents well. Light wear to the frame.
