John Anthony Park was born in Preston, Lancashire, but he moved to St Ives in 1898, where he studied under Julius Olsson. Olsson was allegedly so impressed by Park's ability that he refused payment for tuition, and he was further encouraged to study in Paris. So, from 1905, Park attended the Atelier Colarossi, where he was a contemporary of Modigliani. Strongly influenced by the French Impressionists, Park's palette is always intensely coloured and natural. He travelled widely and taught briefly at Nuneaton School of Art. Park has exhibited at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, the Royal Academy, and at the Paris Salon, where he was awarded a Gold Medal in 1924.
