Artist Biography
Brian Chugg was a painter and writer born in Braunton, Devon. He studied at Bideford School of Art, 1946-49, and at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts, 1949-50. During the period 1953-79, he taught at North Devon College as an Art Lecturer. In 1953 he was given a retrospective exhibition at Barnstaple Museum and Art Gallery, Woodstock Gallery and Piccadilly Gallery, and he also exhibited at the RBA, Leicester Galleries and the Piccadilly Gallery. After architectural experience, 1944–46, Chugg lectured in art at North Devon College, 1953–79. A posthumous exhibition of his work was held at Museum of North Devon, The Square, Barnstaple in 2004. This show was inspired entirely by a particular area of the North Devon coastline at Saunton. All profits were in aid of Devon Wildlife Trust. The paintings and drawings in this exhibition were made between 1956 and 1966. Examples of his work are in Bideford Art Gallery, Devon.
