Artist Biography
Bob Brown NEAC (1936–2023) was a British painter celebrated for his exploration of a wide range of subjects, unified by a consistent and evocative treatment of light. Born in London, he trained at Croydon College of Art, where he studied under Fred Dubery and Lionel Bulmer. Brown was elected to the New English Art Club (NEAC) in 1964 and later served as its Assistant Keeper in 1994. His work received notable recognition, including the Barney Wilkins Howard Prize in 1992 and the Llewellyn Alexander Prize in 1997. He exhibited widely in group shows, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters (RP), and with galleries such as Manya Igel Fine Arts, Llewellyn Alexander, and W. H. Patterson. Among his later solo exhibitions were shows at the Hellenic Cultural Institute in 1996—following his role as artist-in-residence for the Britain in Greece Festival in Athens (1995); at the Mall Galleries in 1998, featuring work inspired by a residency in China with the Royal Academy of Music Sinfonia; and at the Alresford Gallery in 1999. His paintings are held in several notable collections, including the Contemporary Art Society for Wales (CASW) and Unilever.
