A delightful Biedermeier period portrait depicting the innkeeper Ludwig Brandt. One finds oneself captivated by the sitter's gripping gaze, whilst the decorative waistcoat and gold pocket watch inform the viewer of this established gentleman's wealth and status. Unsigned. Inscribed to the stretchers verso. Well presented in a gilt frame with ornate corner ornaments and a delicate running pattern to the inner edge. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
There is minor craquelure, along with ingrained dirt and light abrasions to the surface of the painting. Light discolouration to the varnish. Some undulation to the canvas. Small canvas tear repair and overpainting. The frame shows signs of wear consistent with age, including stable cracking, scuffing and small losses along the edges.
