Bessie Joy Spiers (1843-1901) was a prolific exhibitor showing at the Fine Art Society, Walker Art Gallery, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Society of Women Artists, Ipswich Art Society and at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. Born in Oxford, she was the daughter of a well-to-do Alderman, Magistrate and Merchant and was a sister of Charlotte Horn Spiers and Richard Phene Spiers, with whom she resided at the same London address in Russell Square, Bloomsbury.
