Description

An extremely fine and captivating watercolour by the unknown artist Barthelemy, after an original painting entitled 'La Verite' (The Truth) by French artist Jules Joseph Lefebvre (1836-1911).

This contemporaneous copy has all the calm and arresting nature of the original, with carefully managed tone and a highly skilled proficiency in the medium. The personification of truth holds up a mirror to reflect the light of the sun. The original, painted in 1870, has clear influences from the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, with her long flowing hair and elements of nature in the composition.

Signed, dated and inscribed to the lower left 'Barthelemy 1896 d'apres J. Lefebvre'.

On watercolour paper.

Condition

In very good condition overall. There is some light surface abrasion, mainly to the lower left. Some very light even surface discolouration, expected for a picture of this age.

Size

39.3 x 16cm (15.5" x 6.3")
