Barbara Valentine RMS - Contemporary Oil Miniature Romantic Still Life

Description

A charming miniature with an arched upper edge, depicting pink lilies in an ornate vase beside a key and a portrait of a young woman. In 17th-century Dutch still life paintings keys could symbolise the power and influence of the housewife, while lilies are commonly taken to symbolise purity and devotion. The young woman in the portrait, wearing a stylised c.1840s evening dress, could perhaps be connected to such themes. Alternatively, with her back turned to the symbolic items on the table, she could be interpreted as rejecting them. Presented glazed in a cream mount and a distressed green and gilt-effect frame. The artist's monogram is inscribed within the painting as if etched on the right side of the table. On a porcelain-like substrate.

Artist Biography

Barbara Valentine RMS is an internationally renowned and award-winning miniature painter. She has featured in several books on miniature painting and regularly exhibits work in London and the USA.

She trained at Goldsmiths College, School of Art, London, and today is one of only a handful of miniature painting tutors in the country, holding classes in Mountfield, East Sussex. She is a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors, and Gravers.
