Barbara Doyle (b.1917) - Contemporary Oil Lady In Blue

Description

A very fine oil portrait of an elegant lady, sitting with great poise, hands folded in her lap. She is wearing a patterned kimono type jacket. The artist has used a cool blue palette and gestural, suggestive brush strokes to create pattern and structure in the composition. The impressionistic style and patternation of the garments gives this piece a decorative aesthetic. There is a second, finely painted oil portrait on the reverse this. portrait shows a woman in a wide brimmed Summer hat and white neckerchief reclining in a chair. This portrait shares a similar pose and gentle brushwork than the image on the front of the board. Both paintings are unsigned. On canvas laid to board.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and general, light dirtying to the surface. There is some wear to the paint at the outer edges of the board.

Artist Biography

Barbara Doyle was a British artist, born in Halifax, North Yorkshire in 1917. She spent most of her life living on the South Coast of England. She painted her whole life, right into her later years. She was appointed a member of the Arun Society during her career and exhibited widely across the UK, including at prestigious London venues including the Mall Galleries.
