A fine late 19th century Victorian oil attributed to the highly listed and collected English painted James William Walker. The artist has depicted a rugged woodland landscape, with a young girl collecting firewood by the stream. The scene is typical of Walker's chosen subjects for his watercolours - they often feature the wild woodlands of rural England, with delicate figures used as a focal point. The present painting is excellently presented in a modern gilt frame with beaded decoration, which features a name plaque to the lower edge. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Tiny spots of surface dirt present, along with craquelure across the painting. Paint layer is stable. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.
