Artist Biography
William Payne was born in Exeter and worked as an engineer in Plymouth before moving to London in 1790.
Upon arriving in London he pursued a career as a landscape painter and became a popular drawing master in the city. He exhibited many picturesque views of Plymouth at the Royal Academy and became known for his romantic style of landscape painting.
William Payne is most importantly known for the invention of the colour Payne's Grey in the late 18th Century - a colour that can be used as a mixer for paint instead of black.
