Description
This delightful watercolour, aattributed to the British artist William Payne (1760-1830) depicts an idyllic stretch of English coastline with figures washing laundry by the water's edge. The watercolour has been presented in an attractive gilt-effect frame with a Appleby Bros gallery label fixed to the reverse. A later inscription - "On Devonshire Coast" by William Payne can be found to the reverse of the painting. On paper.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration to the watercolour and wash-line mount.

Artist Biography
William Payne was born in Exeter and worked as an engineer in Plymouth before moving to London in 1790.
Upon arriving in London he pursued a career as a landscape painter and became a popular drawing master in the city. He exhibited many picturesque views of Plymouth at the Royal Academy and became known for his romantic style of landscape painting.
William Payne is most importantly known for the invention of the colour Payne's Grey in the late 18th Century - a colour that can be used as a mixer for paint instead of black.
