Attrib. William Currie (1823-1894) - Framed Oil Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness
Description
A large 19th century oil landscape by Scottish artist William Currie (1823-1894) depicting a majestic view of Loch Ness with Urquhart Castle glowing in the last evening light. A figure can be seen walking beneath the canopy of woodland trees to the right of the loch, bringing a sense of scale to the beautiful Highland vista. The painting is beautifully presented in a gilt and swept frame with floral and acanthus ornamentation. The work bears a handwritten label on the reverse inscribed 'Loch Ness and Castle W Currie', dated 1846. On canvas.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Inspection under UV light reveals minor areas of overpainting. Small tears in the canvas have been patched to the reverse. There is some craquelure to the surface and discolouration to the varnish layer. The gilt effect frame is in good condition with only a small loss to the left hand rail (upper left). The overall condition of the artwork is very good considering its age.
