Description

An impressive oil painting showing a Victorian schoolboy patiently attempting to catch a butterfly. This painting has been inscribed 'R. Elliot' to the boy's slate which leads us to believe the painter may have been well listed Victorian artist, Robinson Elliott. The chocolate box style is also in keeping with the artist's usual creative interests.

Here we see the schoolboy's shoe laces untied and his slate cracked. Elliot includes these subtle details to create a thoughtful and well-rounded character for the viewer. This narrative technique was popular with Victorian painters who enjoyed including symbolism and literary references within their compositions.

Impressively presented in an ornate Rococo style swept frame with floral corner pieces.

On canvas.

Condition

Inspection under UV light shows no restoration. However, there is heavy craqueluree across the painting, as shown. The frame would benefit from restoration, losses to the upper and lower edges appear to have been filled and retouched.
