An obituary affixed to the reverse attributes this remarkable nineteenth-century portrait to a Mr Innes, possibly Robert Innes (1806-1881), two portraits by whom are held in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland. The obituary further references a portrait by Innes of Captain Simon Fraser of Knockie (1733-1852), who, having retired from the army, became a noted fiddler, collector, and composer of folk tunes. He is best known for his 'Airs and Melodies Peculiar to the Highlands of Scotland and the Isles' (1816) (also known as 'The Simon Fraser Collection'), which remains an important reference to this day. Photographs of a similar portrait found online confirm that Fraser is indeed the sitter depicted here. As the present work is unsigned, it is possible that those photographs are of the original by Innes, and that this is a later copy after it. Nevertheless, this is an impressive work with a fascinating history. Well presented in a gilt frame with foliate corner ornamentation. On canvas laid to board.
Condition
The artwork has undergone restorative work; the canvas has been laid to board and there are areas of overpainting. Discolouration and areas of craquelure. Wear to the frame, including some cracking and losses to the ornamentation.
