Robert Charles Dudley (1826-1909) was a painter, illustrator, and lithographer born in Hackney, London. Dudley was largely self-taught and exhibited at the Royal Academy, Agnew's, Dudley Gallery, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the New Society of Painters in Water Colours, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. Between the 1850s and 1870s, he contributed drawings to The Illustrated London News, The Boy's Own Magazine, The Graphic, London Society, and other magazines. He also illustrated a number of books and drew illustrations for Christmas cards. His son christened Robert Ambrose Dudley (1867-1952) was also an artist and is recorded as having shown under the name of Ambrose Dudley at the Royal Academy during the period of 1912-1919. Dudley married Amelia Hunt (1833-1921) the daughter of Victorian artist Andrew Hunt (1791-1861). Examples of his work are included in the permanent collections of the NPG, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Institute of Civil Engineers in London, and the Maritime Museum in Liverpool.
