Description

This atmospheric painting depicts a rustic scene where a figure stands in a dimly lit barn, framed by the dramatic contrast between the dark foreground and a luminous farm landscape view visible through a large opening or window. The scene captures the farmer and his family after a laborious harvest. Unsigned. Plaque on frame attributing the painting to Richard Westall (1765-1836). Presented in a swept gilt frame. On canvas laid to board.

Condition

There is some craquelure to the surface. Light discolouration to the varnish. Marks and some abrasions throughout the surface. Small losses and stable cracking to the gilt frame.
