Attrib. Peter La Cave (1769-1811) - 18th Century Watercolour Farmyard

Description

A farmyard scene with horses and cattle. Presented glazed in a washline mount and a distressed gilt-effect wooden frame. Though unsigned, the painting is typical of the artist and was paired with a signed work by La Cave when acquired by Sulis Fine Art. There is also a later label on the verso which includes the attribution. On wove laid to backing wove.

Condition

There is some discolouration and mount burn. Overall well-presented and in good condition for a picture of this age.

Artist Biography

Peter La Cave (1769-1811) was a painter, watercolourist, and draughtsman, primarily of landscapes with figures. He appears to have been mostly occupied as an art teacher. He worked in London, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy under the name of 'Le Cave', although many of his works are signed 'La Cave'. He is listed as exhibiting works between 1801 and 1806. Works by the artist are in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
