Description

A fine example of an early 19th Century watercolour landscape, attributed to the artist Peter De Wint. The scene shows a man in a red cap leading his horse into the woods surrounding a rustic old water mill. The style of the painting is very much that of De Wint, with many of his artistic tropes visible, including the red capped character to the left who appears in many of his landscapes, the bold shadowing on the architectural elements and the heavy, confident hand used in the areas of foliage. The painting is unsigned and presented in a handsome birdseye maple frame with bolection profile and internal gilt slip. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Some small areas of touching in at the lower right corner and a light scratch at the upper left quadrant. The frame has some general light surface scuffing and minor loss to the veneer at the return edge of one corner.

Artist Biography

Peter De Wint (1784-1849) was an English landscape painter whose father was of Dutch extraction. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1807, and the following year at the Gallery of Associated Artists in Watercolours. He was elected an Associate of the Old Watercolour Society in 1810, and was made a full member the following year. In 1812, he became a member of the Society of Painters in Watercolours, where he exhibited for many years, as well as at the Academy.


De Wint's life was devoted to art; he painted admirably in oils, and he ranks as one of the chief English watercolourists. "No artist", asserted Alfred William Rich, "ever came nearer painting a perfect picture than did Peter de Wint."
