Description

A tranquil landscape painting depicting a cluster of dwellings with terracotta roofs ascending a gentle hillside, their weathered façades reflected in the still river water below. The artist employs a naturalistic palette of earth tones and muted greens, capturing the interplay of light and shadow across the architecture and surrounding vegetation with loose, confident brushwork characteristic of plein air painting. A small horse-drawn cart positioned centre draws the viewer's attention deeper into the landscape. Presented in a gilt-effect frame. Unsigned. Inscribed 'Paul Mathey' verso. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. Light surface discolouration throughout including yellowing to the varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration. A previous tear to the canvas has been fully restored. The frame has minor surface wear consistent with age, including small chips on all rails. The overall condition of the artwork is good.
