Description

An interesting miniature watercolour study depicting a despairing man. Delicately painted with washes of subtle colour. An inscription on the reverse of the small image reads 'Paris', and on the reverse of the mount the name 'Joseph West' has been written in graphite. Possibly a preparatory sketch by the artist Joseph Walter West. Well presented in a cream mount with gilt detailing. Inscribed on the reverse.On wove.

Artist Biography

Joseph West was a painter and printmaker, born in Hull. West studied under Edwin Moore at Bootham School in York and furthered his artistic knowledge at St. John's Wood School of Art, the RA Schools and in Paris at the Académie Julian. He worked in oils, watercolours and tempera and well as lithography. His exhibited extensively at venues including the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, and the Ipswich Art Club. West was elected Royal Society of British Artists in 1893 and Royal Watercolour Society in 1904. Examples of his work are in the collections of Reading Art Gallery and the V&A.
