John Varley (1778-1842) was an English watercolour painter and astrologer who was renowned for his landscape studies. He studies in Holborn under Joseph Charles Barrow in night classes.
He was a frequent exhibitor at the RA and Old Watercolour Society. Many of his studies were inspired by his trips to North Wales were he captured the rural mountain landscape.
Varley was close friends with William Blake. He was the eldest in a family of artists, with brothers Cornelius Varley, William Fleetwood Varley, and brother in law to painter William Mulready
