John Skinner Prout (1805-1876) was born in Plymouth, England. Although his uncle was the leading English watercolourist Samuel Prout (1783-1852), he seems to have been largely self-trained. Prout was one of the most talented artists who working in colonial Australia during the period. In his landscapes he was mainly concerned with revealing picturesque views, and exploring the effects of light and colour, rather than with topographical accuracy. His work influenced a number of artists, such as Conrad Martens in New South Wales and Francis Simpkinson in Tasmania.
