Description

A finely executed and well compositional impressionist style lake scene with two figures in docked boat. The artist has used a muted palette and earthy tones which lends well to the calm and relaxed atmosphere encapsulated in this painting. The subject, tones and brushstroke style is characteristic of the artist John Falconer Slater. It is well presented in a dark red, black and gilt frame. There is a signature on the reverse that reads 'J.F. Slater'. Signed on the reverse.On board.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some overall discolouration to the varnish and very minor craquelure to the right side. Otherwise in good condition. Very minor scuffs to frame.

Artist Biography

Newcastle upon Tyne born painter of seascapes and landscapes, John Falconer Slater was self-taught as an artist. He worked as a bookkeeper before turning to art. Slater showed at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and Royal Academy and works by him are in the collections of the Bank of England, Darlington Borough Art Collection, Durham Art Gallery, Government Art Collection, Laing Art Gallery, Lancaster City Museums, National Maritime Museum, North Lanarkshire Council Museums and Heritage Service, North Tyneside Council, Shipley Art Gallery, South Shields Museum & Art Gallery and Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens. He was a bookkeeper at his father's corn mill before running a store in the diamond fields of South Africa eventually returning to Tyneside to become a full time professional artist. He was a member of the little-known Cullercoats Artist Colony and the slightly better known Bewick Club based in Newcastle.
