Description

A lively village fair set in a pastoral landscape of rustic buildings and rolling hills. At the centre, a young woman is propelled upward from a tilting plank, her arm flung back, while a man in a yellow jacket braces against the opposite end. Groups of women and children are seated on either side of this comic spectacle, a small dog darting between them, and crowds gather in the middle distance near tents and a stone bridge. The subject draws on the northern European kermesse tradition of Bruegel and Teniers, rendered here in the lighter register of the late eighteenth century. The work displays Ramberg's characteristic strengths: fluent draughtsmanship, a gift for animated movement, and a gently humorous eye for the theatre of everyday life, all set down in a delicate palette of soft greens, warm ochres and touches of blue and rose. With pen and ink detail. Well presented in a gilt frame. On watercolour paper.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. Light foxing to the paper. Some marks and minor discolouration to the paper. The frame has minor surface wear and scuffs. Small chips and indentations to the frame. The artwork is in good condition for its age.
