Artist Biography

Ian Simpson (1933-2011) was a painter of townscapes and landscapes in oils and acrylic and a writer and art educator. The son of painter Herbert William Simpson (1907-1972) himself a teacher at the Sunderland College of Art where Ian initially studied. Following his studies at Sunderland College of Art, 1950-53 he spent time at the Royal College of Art under Rodrigo Moynihan and Carel Wright, 1955-58. He was awarded the Associateship of the Royal College of Art in 1958 and also an Abbey Major Travelling Scholarship to Italy. From 1958 he combined working as a painter and illustrator with a career in art education.

He was a visiting lecturer at several London art colleges before becoming Head of the Department of Visual Research at Hornsey College of Art in 1965 and in 1969 Head of Coordinated Studies. In 1972 Simpson was appointed Principal of St. Martin's School of Art a post he held until early retirement in 1988 when the merger with the Central School of Arts & Crafts took place. He exhibited regularly in a solo exhibition and with the Suffolk Group as well as appearing in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. In 1994 he held a solo exhibition at the Chappel Galleries, Essex. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Glasgow Museums, Nuffield Foundation, and the London Borough of Camden.
