An accomplished portrait of a woman wearing a fur coat, attributed to the English artist Harry Mileham (1873-1957). Painted in a manner reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelites, the artist demonstrates dramatic chiaroscuro, with soft golden light illuminating the sitter's face. Unsigned. A numbered label is affixed to the lower left corner. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
Overall the condition is good for a picture of this age. The artwork has undergone restorative work, including canvas tear repairs and areas of overpainting. Wear around the edges of the canvas. Small abrasion in the upper right.

Harry Mileham (1873-1957) was an artist born in Clapton, London. He was educated at Dulwich College and then studied at Lambeth School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. During his studies there, the artist received a gold medal and a Travelling Studentship, allowing him to travel to Italy to continue his studies. Mileham typically depicted biblical, historical, and literary subjects, and painted in a style inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites. As well as painting, he also produced stained glass windows for various churches in Sussex. Mileham was a member of the local Brighton Art Club, as well as a member of the Art Workers' Guild. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Royal Cambrian Academy, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, New Gallery, and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He also represented Great Britain at the 1899 Venice Biennale.
