The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, minor marks and very small areas of paint loss, mainly to the margins. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Some marks and scuffs to the frame.

Harold Riley (b.1934) is a painter, born in Salford, Lancashire, who at only seventeen years of age won a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art. Riley went on to study in Florence and Spain before returning to Salford, where he has lived ever since. Local artist L.S. Lowry saw Riley's work when he was still at school and persuaded the director of Salford City Art Gallery to buy a small painting of a local mill. Known mainly for his portraits, his sitters have included HRH Prince Philip, Nelson Mandel, Pope John Paul II, as well as sporting personalities such as golfers Henry Cotton, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and footballers George Best, Sir Matt Busby and Bryan Robson. He held a solo exhibition at Salford Museum and Art Gallery in 1969 and he has also exhibited at the RA and MAFA.
