A delightful early 20th century watercolour painting, attributed to the artist Frederick James Aldridge. Artist's name inscribed in pencil to the reverse. The scene depicts a coastal view with a large ship and figure on land. Presented in a gilt effect frame. Unsigned. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and light foxing. Some surface marks and small scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

Frederick James Aldridge (1850-1933). Frederick James Aldridge was a south coast artist, who lived in Worthing for 83 years. He is predominantly known for his watercolours, mainly of marine subjects. In this medium he shows exceptional powers. He was a regular visitor to Cowes Week for some 50 years. He exhibited paintings locally, between 1880 and 1901 and also 29 paintings in London venues, including 3 in the Royal Academy and 12 at the Suffolk Street Galleries. He died at the age of 83 in 1933 and his obituary appeared in ‘The Times’ newspaper of that date commented that he has established an international reputation especially in the British Commonwealth Countries.b
