Artist Biography
Edgar Barclay (1842–1913) was a British painter, etcher, and writer known for landscape and rural genre subjects. He was born in London and trained partly on the Continent, including a period of study in Dresden under Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. Barclay spent many years in Italy, especially in Rome, where he became associated with the circle of landscape painters around Giovanni Costa, often referred to as the Etruscan School. His early work was strongly influenced by his travels and included Italian and North African subjects. He later returned to England, where he focused increasingly on idealised views of the English countryside, particularly scenes around Salisbury Plain and Stonehenge. Barclay was also active as a writer, publishing travel literature and a book on Stonehenge alongside his artistic work. Barclay exhibited widely during his lifetime and worked in both oil painting and etching. He was a member of professional bodies including the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He died in 1913.
