Description

A watercolour and body colour view looking up the River Avon from Kings Weston Park. Presented glazed in a wash line mount and a distressed gilt-effect wooden frame with beaded detailing to the inner edge. There is a label on the verso which includes details of the attribution and title. There is a faint inscription that has likely been cut from previous backing paper and adhered to the verso which describes the location. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There are some dents to the frame. Overall in very good condition.

Artist Biography

Anthony Vandyke Copley Fielding (1787-1855), commonly called Copley Fielding, was an English painter born in Sowerby, near Halifax, who is famous for his watercolour landscapes. At an early age, Fielding became a pupil of John Varley. In 1810 he became an associate exhibitor in the Old Watercolour Society, in 1813 a full member and in 1831 President of that body (later known as the Royal Society of Watercolours), until his death. In 1824 he won a gold medal at the Paris Salon alongside Richard Parkes Bonington and John Constable. He also engaged largely in teaching the art and made ample profits. He later moved to Park Crescent in Worthing and died in the town in March 1855. Copley Fielding was a painter of much elegance, taste and accomplishment. He painted a vast number of views including marine subjects. Examples of his work are held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, Scottish National Gallery, Victoria Art Gallery, and the Fitzwilliam Museum and several other institutions.
