A striking portrait of a man with a solemn expression, gazing longingly, lost in thought, into the distance. The artist employs dramatic chiaroscuro lighting, illuminating the sitter's face and providing the piece with emotional depth. The piece is unsigned, but an inscription verso attributes the work to the studio of Cesare Félix Georges Dell'Acqua (1821-1905). Another inscription reads "Memoria cara all'amico Polli," or "In memory of our friend Polli." Well presented in a vintage silver frame. On canvas laid to board.
Condition
Overall, the condition is good for a picture of this age. The canvas has been laid to a board support, some warping to the canvas to the lower right. Discolouration to the varnish. Marks and scuffs to the frame leave it with a deliberately distressed finish.
